Travertine is technically a Limestone, an interesting sedimentary rock made of at least 50% calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. Travertine is a chemical sedimentary rock because it is formed from calcium carbonate precipitation, like you would find in a cave. Water drips into the cave from fresh or marine sources, it then evaporates leaving the calcium carbonate to build up over time. Travertine can be filled for a more polished look or left open for a natural looking floor. Because it is made mostly of calcium carbonate and will hold a polish it is often called a marble.
Polished travertine floors will lose their sheen over time due to everyday traffic in your home. An unpolished, or honed travertine floor will collect dirt and grime as well despite even the best attempts to maintain by homeowners. Once dulled or worn, your travertine tiles can be difficult to clean or restore without professional help. Texas Tile and Stone Care is certified and insured for your peace of mind. We will always give a FREE estimate and travertine floor restoration plan, including all equipment and chemical used, unique to your floor.
